Educational technology dealing with issues (Chapter 1)
After reading this chapter, I have learned that educational technology is defined as " a combination of the processes and tools involved in addressing educational needs and problems, with an emphasis on applying the most current digital and informational tools". The next term introduced was Integrating educational technology, which "refers to the process of matching digital tools and methods to given educational needs and problems". Instructional technology is defined as, "the subset of educational technology that deals directly with teaching and learning applications rather than educational administrative ones". When working with technology, issues can always arise. For example, viruses can damage data and slow down networks. Another issue is privacy, which can be extremely difficult to remain private. There are plenty of different ways to interrupt privacy within technology. Although most school district's have unwanted sites blocked, students often tend to still try and get around them. Teachers and administration are then held accountable for these student's actions. I think a major con to technology today is cyber-bullying. So many children, as well as adults, are spending their free time on social media harassing each other with derogatory terms. However, technology also has a tremendous positive impact on education. Students now have Ipads, Kindles, and Chromebooks in their classrooms. From my own experience as an assistant sped teacher, my students have access to useful technology daily. One of the main tools is speech to text. This is an accommodation for these sped children, and it is a very significant resource. Overall, I think technology in education plays a huge role for success. As long as teachers are aware of the risks and monitor technology time, I think it a great benefit to education. Learning theories for technology integration and the technology integration planning model for teachers (Chapter 2) There are two different types of learning theories addressed throughout this chapter. The first is directed instruction, which means the material is planned by the teacher. The second is inquiry-based learning, which means students plan their own learning instruction from past experiences, while teachers will monitor and assist. I think both learning theories are beneficial. However, I think directed instruction should be used in lower levels such as K-3rd. However, resource, inclusion, and sped students should always have directed instruction throughout their education. Inquiry-based learning could have a productive effect on accelerated students and upper level grades. At often times, it can be challenging for a student to learn material without instruction from a teacher, but also allow them to become independent learners. Technology integration planning is a three phase process that allows teachers to access useful resources to plan and provide educational technology lessons. The first phase is analysis of teaching/learning needs. The second phase is designing an integration framework, and the third is post-instruction analysis and revisions. These step by step instructions are easy and effective for teachers to plan out their weekly classroom instruction. The TIP model also assists as reassurance towards curriculum activities.

My name is Kelsey McGrevey and I am from Biloxi, MS. I am currently working as an assistant special education teacher, while working on my Bachelors in Elementary Education. This is my first semester at Southern, and I am a transfer student from MGCCC. This semester I am focusing on obtaining my endorsements in science and social studies. As for the Spring semester, I hope to be enrolled in the teaching assistant program, with a successful completion of the Praxis. I look forward to learning and familiarizing myself with useful information from this class.
